How Much RAM Does a Minecraft Server Need?
Choosing the right amount of RAM for your Minecraft server can be confusing. RAM alone does not determine player capacity. CPU allocation, Java version, view distance, mods, plugins, world size, farms, and active exploration all matter.
General Recommendations by Workload
| RAM Allocation | Starting Use Case | Consider Upgrading When... |
|---|---|---|
| 2 GB (Spark Plan) | Small Vanilla world or a few friends with a simple setup. | Memory stays close to the limit, startup fails, or normal play causes repeated lag. |
| 4 GB (Blaze Plan) | Small Paper or Purpur community using lightweight plugins. | You add more active players, plugins, or world activity than the server handles comfortably. |
| 8 GB (Phantom Plan) | Plugin-based communities, active worlds, and light compatible modpacks. | Tick time rises regularly or the modpack needs more memory during normal use. |
| 16 GB (Titan Plan) | Demanding compatible Forge/Fabric packs, larger communities, and heavy world activity. | Your pack, players, or server monitoring show sustained resource pressure. |
| 24+ GB (Overlord / Infinity) | Large communities, multi-world setups, proxy-related workloads, and advanced networks. | Your design requires additional CPU, memory, storage, or a more specialized architecture. |
What happens if my server runs out of RAM?
If your server exceeds its allocated memory, it will likely crash with an OutOfMemory (OOM) error. The Pterodactyl daemon will usually attempt to restart the server automatically. If this happens frequently, you must either optimize your world (reduce view distance, remove heavy plugins) or upgrade to a plan with more RAM.
It's Not Just About RAM
Keep in mind that while RAM is crucial for holding the loaded chunks, player data, and active entities in memory, CPU performance is what actually processes the game logic. If your TPS is dropping but you still have plenty of free RAM, upgrading your RAM won't fix the lag—you need better single-thread CPU performance or a more optimized server setup.
