How to Upload a Custom Minecraft Modpack with SFTP
Uploading a custom modpack allows you to play exactly the way you want with your community. By using the Pterodactyl panel and an SFTP client like FileZilla or WinSCP, you can transfer large modpack files securely and quickly.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Backup your server: Always create a backup of your existing server files before making changes. You can do this from the Backups tab in your panel.
- Get your SFTP details: Open the Settings tab in your Pterodactyl panel. You will see your server address, username, and port. Your SFTP password is the same password you use to log into the panel.
- Connect via SFTP: Open FileZilla (or WinSCP), enter your host, username, password, and port (usually 2022), and click Quickconnect.
- Prepare your files: Make sure your modpack is extracted locally or zipped correctly. You need the required
modsfolder, configuration files, and the compatible server.jarfile. - Upload the files: Drag and drop your modpack server files into the root directory of your server in the SFTP client. Wait for the transfer to complete.
- Configure the panel: In the Pterodactyl panel, navigate to the Startup tab. Ensure the correct Java version is selected for your modpack (e.g., Java 17 for newer versions, Java 8 for older versions like 1.12.2). Also, set the correct Startup Command if your modpack requires a specific forge/fabric jar.
- Start and Monitor: Start the server from the Console tab. Watch the logs carefully for any missing files, incompatible mods, or memory errors (OOM).
Pro Tip: If your server crashes immediately upon startup, check the
crash-reports or logs folder. The most common issues are missing library dependencies, mixing client-side mods on the server, or running out of RAM.Need a server with enough RAM for your modpack?
Heavy modpacks require sufficient memory. Check out our Titan and Overlord plans designed specifically for demanding workloads.
